In order to be able to draw the red squiggles that mark spelling errors as you type, Word has to be able to determine whether a word is valid very quickly. In this episode, we explore a technique called Spelling Tries that can make the retrieval of a word from a dictionary very fast.

Genetic Search

Some computer science problems do not lend themselves to straightforward solutions. In fact, for some problems, computing the "correct" solution would take more time than we have. For these types of problems, we design solutions that will find a "good enough" solution is the amount of time we have.
One strategy for how to deal with these types of problems is genetic search. This strategy is based on the theory of evolution in biology. This podcast details that strategy with a couple of examples.
